Jeffrey Briar Leads Laughter Yoga Exercises

Jeffrey Briar was a teacher of traditional yoga and an accomplished comedic actor for 35 years before embracing the world of Yogic/Therapeutic Laughter. He is certified as a Laughter Yoga Teacher by Dr. Kataria and is a Master Trainer for the Dr. Kataria School of Laughter Yoga (Laughter Yoga International University). He is also certified as a Laughter Leader by Steve Wilson (World Laughter Tour) and as a Laughing Meditation Teacher by Sarito Sun. See media clips featuring Mr. Briar.

http://www.lolheals.com During Laughter Yoga, exercises stimulate blood circulation, raising the blood pressure for a period before it comes back below the base level. The muscles contract during a Laughter Session before they come back to their Relaxation Mode. Consequently, the real benefits of Laughter Yoga do not occur during the stimulation phase, but become apparent after the Laughter Session, during relaxation.
Some groups incorporate light Physical Exercises between bouts of Laughter, especially when Laughter Clubs meet in the morning for Seniors and special groups. The Physical Exercises chosen may promote mobility through Stretching, ease Cervical Spondylosis, Neck Stiffness and Frozen Shoulder, and other common complaints of Seniors. Some Laughter Yoga groups perform Laughter Exercises in a more energetic way and develop high energy exercises (like power Yoga). Laughter Yoga is a breakthrough laughter delivery system that enables a person to laugh continuously for 15 to 20 minutes with short breaks of yogic breathing.
Below are 20 Laughter Yoga exercises to get you started. Try to practice them with others and appreciate that they are indeed highly incongruous. And choosing to laugh as and when you want to is not a sign of silliness, it’s a sign of maturity.
These exercises will shift your mood state if you give them a chance for at least 10 minutes.
5 Classic Laughter Yoga Exercises
Cell Phone Laughter: Hold an imaginary cell phone to your ear and laugh.
Gradient Laughter: Fake a smile; giggle, then laugh slowly and gradually increase in tempo and volume.
Greeting Laughter: Greet everybody the way you normally greet (e.g. shake hands) and replace words with laughter.
Hearty Laughter: Spread your arms up, look up and laugh heartily as you direct your laughter to come straight from your heart.
Think of a socially awkward situation and laugh at it (e.g. shoe laces untied, shaving cream behind your ears…)

The core philosophy of Laughter Yoga is not that of seeking happiness, but of cultivating joy. Happiness is a concept of the mind, dependent on a variety of scenarios all of which, for the most part, are fleeting – once achieved or obtained, that which was sought to bring happiness, waxes cold. Completely happy people are a rarity. Conversely, joy can be triggered by the simplest of physical activities, such as singing, dancing, playing or laughing all of which are the basic tenets of Laughter Yoga.

Children are born with the basic elements of joy intact; unfortunately, as we age, joy is lost to inhibitions and self-consciousness that often limit participation in joyful activities. A Laughter Club can bring those elements back, making singing, dancing, playing and laughing easier within a safe environment. Once your body knows what to do, practicing the same “happy” exercises alone will become even easier.

About Laughter Yoga Clubs

Laughter Clubs are a worldwide network of social clubs run by volunteers under the aegis of Laughter Yoga International based in Bangalore, India. People get together in groups in public places or indoor venues and practice Laughter Yoga exercises along with breathing and stretching exercises to reap the enormous health benefits.

No control on Laughter Clubs, no posts, no hierarchy, all Laughter Clubs are individual entities and are free functioning units. They are not under control of any other organization of a group or an institution anywhere in the world. Though there are no rules and regulations, but we do offer guidelines for functioning. All Laughter Clubs should be:

What’s Free

Laughter Yoga Clubs are social clubs that are free for all anywhere in the world. We do not charge any membership fee anywhere. However, members of the club should share expenses towards hiring of venue or any equipment hire.

What’s Fee Based

Outside of the Laughter Clubs, any Training/ Coaching conducted by laughter leaders or teachers for personal and business development are chargeable as per the skills, abilities and reputation of the teachers.

Starting A Laughter Club In India

In India, most Laughter Clubs function on a daily basis and the members meet at public parks where people go for a morning walk. If you want to start a Laughter Club, find a place in your locality where people can assemble early morning while going for a walk. It can be a public park, an open ground, or a beach. The advantage of selecting such a place is that you can combine Laughter Yoga sessions with your morning walk. The chosen place should not be in the immediate vicinity of residential complexes so as to prevent any disturbance to others. In areas where weather conditions are not favorable throughout the year, it is not possible to have laughter sessions round the year. Under such circumstances these sessions can be held during Yoga classes at health clubs or at aerobic centers, where laughter can be a value addition to the ongoing activities.

Laughter Yoga International arranges for a team of experts to give lectures and demonstrations of various techniques of yogic Laughter. They also train leaders to conduct laughter sessions everyday. The expenses for conveyance, boarding and lodging of the team of experts are borne by the organizing group. If you can’t afford the expenses, you can approach social organizations like the Rotary or Lions, or corporate houses and philanthropists to sponsor the event in the public interest.

In Other Countries

The concept of Laughter Clubs is slightly different in the West where club members like to meet for 1-2 hours every weekend or fortnightly. They laugh together for 30 minutes along with breathing and stretching exercises, followed by Laughter Meditation for 30 minutes. After that there are humor activities, fun games, brain storming on psychological and philosophical aspects of laughter and dancing with music. This is known as a social Laughter Club. It operates on a no profit basis and all the expenses of the venue, food and drinks are shared by the members. The frequency of such laughter meetings can be increased or decreased according to the convenience of the group. You need to be trained as a laughter leader to start a Laughter Club. We organize workshops and training programs from time to time in India, Europe, America and Canada. By training yourself as a laughter leader you can do laughter seminars for companies and corporations on stress management through laughter and humor. Also, Laughter Yoga concept can be value added to those who are professional speakers, motivational speakers and trainers.
